Job Summary

The Team
This Child Protection Team is a collaborative and supportive group of 6-8 members including, Social Program Officer Assistants, Child, Youth and Family Support Workers, Child Protection Worker and a Team Leader each bringing a wealth of knowledge and diverse strengths and approaches to the work. This close-knit, experienced team partners with local Indigenous Nations, community service providers, and internal Ministry teams including Guardianship, Resources, Children and Youth Mental Health, Children and Youth with Support Needs, to ensure that children have safe, nurturing home environments. Known for their camaraderie and dedication, the team consistently goes above and beyond to support one another and make a meaningful impact in caring for the families and children they serve.

The Role
This Child Protection Worker, 7 on 7 off is responsible for conducting child protection assessments and developing safety plans, in line with current evidence based best practice, through collaboration with families and community agencies. Your work will have a profound effect on local families, by helping to provide the necessary support and protection for children and youth. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements


Applicants may be considered who meet the preferred OR expanded credentials and experience requirements

1. Preferred Credentials:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Social Work or in Child & Youth Care OR Master's Degree in Educational Counselling Psychology/Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology with completion of a practicum in family and child welfare OR
  • In-service Ministry of Children and Family Development employees who have a regular SPO 24-30 base position that requires delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA) OR
  • A candidate may be considered equivalent when they are registered and a member in good standing with the BC College of Social Workers or has a letter from the College confirming that their application for registration has been approved.
    • NOTE: If this education was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services ( ICES ). You must provide a comprehensive report and the MCFD supplemental report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.

2. Expanded Credentials:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Human Services field OR Bachelor's Degree witha Major/Honors in a Human Services field OR Master's level graduate Certificate/Diploma in a Human Services field AFTER the completion of an unrelated Bachelor's Degree.
  • PLUS, a minimum of one year of related OR job-specific work experience.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
    • NOTE: If this education was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services ( ICES ). You must provide a basic report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.

Human Services fields include: Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Education, Theology or Nursing.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Preferred education credentials AND/OR in-service Ministry of Children and Family Development employees who hold a regular SPO 24-30 base position that requires delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA)
  • Eligible for delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA).
  • Currently holds C6 delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA).
  • Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) with the required combination of education and experience.

Please note:
  • Applicants may be considered who have not yet graduated but have completed all required courses and are able to provide a letter from their educational institution confirming completion of degree requirements.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with no restriction or equivalent (i.e. from another Canadian Province).

About this Position:

This position has full time on-site requirements.
There is presently one Regular Full Time position available. It may be located in either Kitimat or Terrace depending on operational requirements at the time of offer.
The position will be providing services in Kitimat or Terrace and your home and/or headquarter will be located in the lower mainland or equally cost effective location outside of the following locations: Ashcroft, Dease Lake, Lilooet, Ft. Nelson, Ft. St. James, McBride, Smithers, Hazelton, Terrace, Kitimat, Williams Lake and will be on travel status for the purpose of travel to and from the community offices.
This position is on travel status.
This position will work on a travelling schedule working seven (7) days in the office followed by seven (7) days of rest at their home location (home location is defined as your usual place of residence). Travel to and from the community offices will occur within the scheduled work days.
This position is not eligible for Isolation Allowance or Retention Incentive Programs.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Criminal Record Review Act Check (CRRA) will be required.
Kitimat is by the Kitimat River, resulting in a wide range of water activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, boating, and visiting hot springs. Surrounded by beautiful forests and mountains, it is perfect for hiking, rock climbing, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing. Kitimat regularly hosts community events, such as fishing derbies and Winterfest celebrations.
Known most famously for their Kermode (Spirit) Bear, Terrace is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, camping, rock climbing, canoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. The First Nations in the area, the Tsimshian, are proud to show others the First Nation's culture, which includes traditional longhouses.
